Suddenly seeking stress

I recently read a book called the Upside of Stress by Kelly McGonigal. I loved it, so had to share.  I found about the book through McGonigal’s TED talk titled "How To Make Stress Your Friend". If you’re not a book lover, at the very least you should listen to this TED talk.

My top takeaways from the book are:

  • We’re doing stress wrong. Stress is not bad for you. It does not cause a whole range of health problems and it will not ultimately kill you. That is unless you think stress is bad for you. If you think it is bad for you, then it will be bad for you. The belief that stress is harmful is harmful.
  • To get good at stress, all you have to do is change your mindset on stress. For instance:

Stress is harmful enhancing

Experiencing stress debilitates enhances my performance and productivity
Experiencing stress depletes improves my health and vitality


  • A stress-free life does not ensure happiness. High levels of stress come along with the things we want: purpose, meaning, community, love. So embrace your crazy, busy, stressful life and enjoy!


This is the one book that has actually changed my life. I can’t think of any other book I would say that about… but there are many books I have not yet read.
